District nursing in the larger towns such as Bendigo was initially free, but by 1977 patients were charged $4 per visit. The Victorian Health Department currently sets the fee for District Nursing visits.
In 1994 Numurkah District Nursing Patients totaled 201, with approximately 7,000 visits to these patients for the year. The service continues to provide a seven-day a week service, catering for patients within their home setting. The need for this vital service continues to grow with a current trend of earlier discharge from hospital.
